The typical frontier Appalachian man was one who lived off the land. They needed to be strong in order to farm the land and hunt wild game. Appalachian men had developed great hunting and tracking skills while living in Appalachia. It is said that a frontiersman could fell a deer at over 200 yards will his long barrel rifle.(1) This accuracy made the frontiersman more deadly than any Colonial or British troop who used a highly inaccurate musket. Almost all were proficient horse riders as well and could travel very light. Traditional clothing of the frontiersman was very modest and typically consisted of earthy tones of green and brown. They often wore skins of trapped animals and had a very folk lore appearance. (2)
